CHARACTER
CHARACTER NAME: Captain Marika Kato
SERIES: Bodacious Space Pirates
CANON POINT: Post-Series, after defeating Quartz Christie and her ship the Grand Cross, and after passing her finals
LOSS: The ability to make a Japanese pot-au-feu style dish called oden. Her mother learned how to make it despite being a terrible cook and did so well her father made the recipe a locked up pirate's secret and treasure. The dish is said to bring peace and love to whomever eats it, and it's only when Marika's mother, Ririka, feels she is grown up enough and able to handle her pirate duties and her school duties well that she teachers her the recipe and has her make it for her closest friends. It signified a lot of Marika's development as she grows to be an adult and the trust her family places in her, as well as the bond her and her mother shared. Gold and gems aren't the only things one can hoard and treasure, after all.

If she attempts to make it, it will fail. Recalling the recipe to herself or anyone will fail, forgetting or replacing ingredients. If she wishes for it, what she will be given is a watered down knockoff at best. She will not be able to re-learn any recipe for it.

ABOUT THE CHARACTER: Piracy evokes images of ruthlessness, of cutthroat actions and bloody overtakings. There is lawlessness and chaos. But it also evokes images of swashbuckling, of curious chivalry, resourcefulness and a love of freedom. It is in all these things Marika finds herself.

The first and most noticeable thing about the girl is how amazingly optimistic she is. There is an unfettered cheerfulness about her, smiling wide and bright, encouraging those around her to feel the same way. Even in the midst of her hardest fights, she faces them with nothing but hope and a smirk, refusing to show her enemies any sign of weakness, because that's just how a pirate rolls. She has an ability to see the upside of anything and cheer anyone up, giving them the courage needed to smile again and face life. Those that would oppose her are greeted with this friendliness of hers and thrown off guard. Her spirit is indomitable, and it takes a lot to bear down on her, and even then she's able to shrug it off once she decides on a course of action.

Which leads us to our next biggest point; Marika's unshakable resolve. Her determination is the stuff of legends, and her blood runs hotter than the stars and suns she sails by. Once she decides to do something, very little will stop her from doing so, nor will she change her methods or path for anyone, especially her enemies. Her sheer force of will got her this far and enabled her to do things other pirates couldn't even dream of like going face to face with the Empire's own experimental pirate ship the Grand Cross and surviving long enough to destroy it, giving the older pirates hope for the new generation. “Giving up” doesn't exist in her vocabulary.

There's also an odd sense of chivalry about her, belonging only to the swashbuckling pirates found in children's tales, yet brought to life through her actions. Everyone gets a chance to surrender without a fight, and those that choose bloodshed are met with perfect manners and formalities. She also makes sure to put on a good show for everyone under the shows she's given; Marika possesses a Letter of Marque and while her acts are legal and often cast as forms of entertainment, it doesn't mean she won't do the best job she can for herself, her crew, and everyone watching. Requests involving her friends get special precedence, and she is fiercely loyal to her crew and classmates, her faith in them not wavering once. Even her studies are never forgotten, making sure she comes home in time to pass her exams at school and keep her mind as sharp as her sword.

Unfortunately, as amazing as she is starting to sound, Marika does have her faults, and they show as strongly as the rest of her. For one, she is very easily flustered and embarrassed. Compliments turn her bright red, as does anything regarding more mature matters, such as relationships or the idea of them. Sure, she helped her friend rescue a mutual buddy of theirs from an arranged marriage, only to find out the two were lesbian lovers and was happy to see them reunited. But when they kissed in front of her, she went red and could barely function. Not because they were lesbians, but the fact anyone was being sweet with anyone else near her made her react bad. The dear captain still has a bad case of believing cooties exist.

She's also a large ham. She has a bit of an ego on her, whether she realizes it or not, and tries to hog the spotlight if it shines near her, delivering speeches in style and accentuating her words with large, sweeping hand motions and other exaggerated body language. In battle, she makes sure to take the lead and pick the most dangerous and exciting jobs to pull off, going so far as to escort other, more veteran pirates under her command. This leads her to biting off more than she can chew, and although her plans have seen her through successfully, some were very very narrow victories. She lives for drama and thrill of it all.

She also tends to over-exert herself in anything she does. Her expectations for herself outstretch anything anyone else puts on her, and while everyone's faith in her is strong, it drives her to do her best at the cost of her own health sometimes. She has passed out in her captain's chair and in class countless times trying to keep her grades up while she's off plundering cruise liners and fending off top-secret government pirate ships. There are times Marika is made to eat or rest and give up her work for a bit at the behest of others, making her feel a bit incompetent. How can she do everyone good if she breaks down? How could she have overlooked that? This leads to her doing even more to make sure she keeps her word and makes her father's legacy proud.

To be gung-ho is to throw yourself into your work and your duty with unrivaled zeal. Marika only became a pirate because she heard her father had died, and as his only child and heir, it was now her duty regardless of her age and ability to lead his crew and all of the pirates that should would be rivaling into a new age of piracy. One where the Letter of Marque she was given so the government would look away from her would be unneeded and people could be truly free to roam the stars. However, she has shouldered this tremendously in only her first year as a pirate, and has shown she has promised without equal. If only she could learn to balance herself and not get so easily worked-up, she would become the leader everyone expects of her. She is, however, still a kid and has a long way to go before she can truly grasp that role and what it means.

Marika is, simply put, gung-ho about everything and everyone, for better or for worse.

ABILITIES: Marika is an average human with no special powers. She knows some basic swordsmanship and martial arts, but not much beyond beginner level to put on better shows with. She can handle rifles quite well, though in her time, they fire lasers and not bullets.

Her specialty is forming strong battle tactics and sticking to them and pulling off insane stunts other pirates wouldn't dare dream of, but this is more a result of her training and personality than a special ability.

THIRD-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE: To be captain means being the leader. You have to stand up front, lead your crew, be the first one in battle and possibly the last one to leave ship. You represent them and your ship and their honor. You are their name. You are their reputation. How well you carry yourself is how well others will see you and the men under you.

These tenets ran through Marika's mind as she stepped forward, boots clacking down strong with each step, making her way through the Bentenmaru's halls and up to the curtains that were placed at the end for her conveniently. They'd boarded the liner with intent to pilfer, but not without putting on the best show they could. This, too, was her duty, and Marika felt her pulse race as she found herself standing quiet behind the stage, crew smiling and eager behind her, their hands on their sabers strong and capes rustling a bit.

They could sense everyone on the other side preparing to face them. Glasses clinked down, words became hushed, movements became jerkier and more nervous sounding. Tensions rose to a peak as Marika picked up her rifle, cocking it and holding it close to her chest, rubbing it a bit to calm herself and keep her focused, swallowing hard. She could be shaky later, but not now. Now was the time to be gallant. To be a swashbuckler and live up to her bloodline.

So as the curtains rose on her and the spotlight centered on her, she changed her determined look to a smug one, grinning wide and sweeping her cape up defiantly. It was time for the young pirate to breathe life into this ship and put the fear and glory of her lineage into her audience. She lifted her rifle as her finger curled around the trigger and, after aiming nowhere anyone would get hurt, fired a warning shot and let the explosion and its light reflect off her eyes.

"It's time for some piracy!" yelled Marika, her voice bellowing and echoing as her crew rallied and cheered behind her. The people she had captive were further captivated by her charm and enthusiasm. The captain snorted in approval as she began to walk forward and demand everyone's valuables. There was an undeniable thrill to it all, and she found herself smiling wider and more genuine as she made the terror of the Bentenmaru crew known to all.

Maybe a pirate's life was for her, after all.

FIRST-PERSON JOURNAL SAMPLE: H-hey? Is this thing on? It's so old and dusty looking, even compared to the restaurant, I can barely believe it works. May as well give it a shot, anyways.

Bentenmaru crew, report it! This is your captain speaking! Give me a status report! I repeat, this is your captain speaking, report in!

...Eh? It's not going to work, is it? Looks like I got to take care of this the old fashioned way and find my own way around then. A pirate must face adventure head on and not look back once they've set sail, after all!

If anyone is out there though, can you tell me where I've docked? I don't remember there being any place like this on my route. It'd be much appreciated!

INTENT: I want someone more sociable, happy, and optimistic than Alleyne is to balance out how gruff and serious she can be. I've noticed playing serious types so long put a creative drain on me and I'm hoping Marika can bring some life into me and Paradisa as a whole.
